eSIM on iPhone vs Android for a Dubai trip: compatibility check and install steps

A Dubai travel eSIM works on both iPhone and Android, provided the phone supports eSIM and is not locked to a carrier. The process is the same on both: check support, check the lock, install from a QR code or app, then choose the new line for mobile data. Menu names differ, and Apple publishes exact ones, so this guide is precise for iPhone and deliberately general for Android.

Key takeaways

  • Apple says eSIM works on iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max, iPhone XR or later.
  • On any phone, a carrier lock blocks another provider's travel eSIM. On iPhone, Carrier Lock should read "No SIM Restrictions".
  • Android menus vary by brand and version, so use the manufacturer's own support page for exact steps.
  • Install before you fly: Saily and Roamless both say you cannot buy or install their eSIM from inside the UAE.

The short answer

An eSIM is a SIM profile stored on a chip inside the phone, so installation is a software step rather than a plastic card. Both iOS and Android support it on recent models, and a Dubai travel plan installs the same way on either.

What changes is where you find the settings and how you confirm eligibility. The two sections below cover each platform, followed by the checks that apply to both.

iPhone

  • eSIM from iPhone XS, XS Max, XR or later (Apple)
  • Carrier Lock shown in Settings, General, About
  • Exact, documented menu names

Android

  • eSIM support depends on the model, not the brand alone
  • SIM manager location varies by maker and version
  • Carrier lock confirmed with your home operator

Does your phone support eSIM?

Compatibility is the first check, because an unsupported phone will simply not show an option to add an eSIM. Do it at home, before you pay for a plan.

iPhone

Apple lists eSIM support on iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max, iPhone XR and later models, and says an iPhone can manage up to eight or more eSIMs. Apple's own page on eSIM on iPhone is the reference to check your model against. An iPhone bought through a carrier can still be locked, which is a separate question covered below.

Android

We do not publish a list of supported Android models here, because support depends on the exact model and sometimes on the regional version of the phone. The reliable sources are the phone maker's support page for your model and the provider's own compatibility check. TonMobile's app includes a device compatibility check, and its UAE plan page has a device check button.

A quick Android test

If your phone's SIM or connection settings offer an option to add a mobile plan by scanning a QR code, it very likely has eSIM support. Treat that as a hint, then confirm with the maker's page, because wording differs between versions.

The carrier lock check for both platforms

A locked phone is tied to one operator and cannot use another provider's travel eSIM. This catches more people than missing eSIM support does, especially with phones bought on a contract.

On iPhone, Apple says to open SettingsGeneralAbout and look at Carrier Lock. It should show "No SIM Restrictions". Any other text means the phone is locked, and only your home operator can unlock it.

On Android there is no single menu that works across brands. Ask your home operator whether the phone is locked, particularly if it was bought through a carrier or financed. This is the same advice as in our eSIM not working in the UAE troubleshooting guide.

Install a Dubai eSIM on iPhone

Apple says you can buy a prepaid travel plan before the trip and activate it by QR code or through the provider's app. Follow the provider's own instructions first, since they may use a direct install link. The generic route is below, with menu names as Apple publishes them.

  1. Connect to Wi-Fi

The profile downloads over the internet, so use home or office Wi-Fi rather than the UAE network.

  2. Open the eSIM install screen

Go to SettingsCellularAdd eSIM and choose to scan the QR code from your provider's email or app.

  3. Label the line

Name it something clear, such as "Dubai", so you can tell it from your home line.

  4. Choose the data line

In SettingsCellularCellular Data, select the travel eSIM when you land. Apple notes that if both lines stay on, the primary line keeps working.

  5. Check roaming on arrival

Allow data roaming on the travel line, since a foreign eSIM roams by design, and turn it off on your home line.

  1. Wheels downKeep the eSIM line off until the seatbelt sign goes off.
  2. Line onTurn on the travel eSIM line you installed at home.
  3. Data linePick the travel line for cellular data.
  4. RoamingAllow data roaming on the travel line if the provider asks for it.
  5. First messageSend a text in a messaging app to check data works.

Install a Dubai eSIM on Android

Android installs follow the same logic but the menus differ between Samsung, Pixel and other brands, and between software versions. Treat the outline below as general pointers and rely on the provider's instructions for exact taps.

  • Connect to Wi-Fi before starting.
  • Find the SIM manager or "SIMs" section, usually under network or connection settings.
  • Choose the option to add an eSIM or mobile plan and scan the provider's QR code, or use the provider's app if it offers direct install.
  • Name the new line so it is easy to recognise.
  • Set the travel eSIM as the preferred SIM for mobile data, and turn data roaming on for it.
  • Switch roaming off for your home line.

Some Android phones let you switch the active eSIM from a quick-settings tile or notification. That can be convenient, but it is not universal, so check what your phone offers before the flight.

Two lines at once

Most recent phones can keep a physical SIM and an eSIM active together, which is called dual SIM. That is exactly what a Dubai trip needs: your home SIM for bank codes and calls, and the travel eSIM for data. The glossary explains dual SIM and the other terms used here.

Where iPhone and Android differ in practice

The result is the same on both, so the differences are mostly about certainty and convenience.

What to do before you fly, on either phone

Preparation matters more than platform. Use this list on whichever phone you carry.

  • Confirm eSIM support and the carrier lock status at home.
  • Buy and install the plan on Wi-Fi before departure. TonMobile's terms say service starts at activation, and the UAE page states activation within 180 days.
  • Know which line is which, and keep the home SIM active for SMS. TonMobile's eSIM has no phone number and cannot receive SMS.
  • Do not delete the profile. A deleted or incorrectly installed profile is a no-refund case in TonMobile's terms.
  • Screenshot your QR code and order details in case you need support later.

Plan size

Not sure what to buy? Our guide to how much data you need in Dubai lists fixed UAE plans from 1 GB to 20 GB and the daily unlimited passes, and the rating compares providers.

Calls and apps behave the same on both

The UAE rules apply regardless of phone. WhatsApp and FaceTime voice and video calls are restricted on UAE networks, while text messages, photos and voice notes work. Botim is a licensed calling app, and other apps such as Zoom and Microsoft Teams appear on Gulf News's list of allowed options. Our WhatsApp calls in Dubai guide has the details, and a failed call does not mean the eSIM is broken.

FAQ

Which iPhones support eSIM?

Apple says eSIM works on iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max, iPhone XR or later. Check Apple's support page for your exact model before buying a plan.

How do I check if my iPhone is carrier locked?

Open Settings, General, About and look at Carrier Lock. Apple says it should show "No SIM Restrictions" to use another carrier's travel eSIM. Anything else means your home operator must unlock it.

Do all Android phones support eSIM?

No. Support depends on the model and sometimes the regional version. Check the maker's support page for your phone or use a provider's compatibility check, such as the one in TonMobile's app.

Can I install a Dubai eSIM after landing?

Some providers do not allow it. Saily says its eSIMs cannot be bought from within the UAE, and Roamless says installation is not permitted once you are there. Install at home on Wi-Fi.

Will my home SIM still work with a travel eSIM?

On most recent phones, yes, as dual SIM. Choose the travel eSIM for mobile data and keep the home SIM for calls and SMS. On iPhone, Apple says the primary line keeps working if both lines stay on.

Is the install different for a provider's app and a QR code?

The result is the same: a new line on your phone. A provider app may add the profile for you, while a QR code is scanned from the SIM or eSIM settings. Follow your provider's instructions.
